12/14 2 Peter 3:11

¹¹ Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness . . .

Peter tells us that on the day of God the heavens will be dissolved and everything on earth exposed (Isaiah 34:4). Every physical thing men devote themselves to will be gone. Some people amass fortunes only to die and leave them to others who did not labor for them. Heirs fight among themselves over things that will vanish away. Who is living for eternity? Who realizes what is really of value?

People of genuine faith in God's Word do as Jesus commanded, laying up treasures in heaven instead of on the earth (Matthew 6:19-20). Why would you invest in a stock or business you know would one day fail? Why wouldn't you invest in one that you knew was going to never fail and the dividends of which were certain to be out of this world!

The question then is this: how do we invest in such a sure thing? Peter tells us the answer. Once you have received the salvation Jesus offers, live a life of holiness and godliness. Live in communion with God and His Word, seeking always to do His will. Set your heart on things above, and not on earthly things (Colossians 3:1). Keep the reality of eternity always before you, while at the same time knowing all the things men spend their lives on will soon be gone.

Consider: Satan tempts us with the temporal things of this life because that is all he has to offer. He promises that things will satisfy, but he neglects to tell us that they won't last long and says nothing about the price we will end up paying.
