6/16 Romans 5:10

¹⁰ For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.

What an amazing and loving God we serve! While we were rebelling against our Creator, He did for us what we could not do for ourselves by taking the judgment we deserved and dying in our place. Paul is telling us that if He went to that extent to redeem us when we were shaking our fist in His face, consider what He will do now that we are reconciled to Him.

Paul describes what is happening to us now as being saved by the life of Jesus. After being reconciled, He takes up residence within us (John 14:23). His very life is within our spirit. That life begins the process of sanctifying our every action, conforming us to His image. It is salvation from the destructive patterns of our fallen nature. We'll be in that "much more" process of being saved by His life until we leave these old bodies behind.

Saving us by His life is drawing us "much more" closer to the heart of God. We are being transformed in the way we think and the things we desire. It's not that God loves us more, for He sees the finished work and could not love us more than He already does. We are "much more" saved from the consequences of sin because we are increasingly setting it aside. Our hearts are "much more" assured of the promise of heaven, for we can see the life of Christ at work in us. As the fruits of the Spirit increase in our life because of His life in us, we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God (Romans 5:2).

Prayer: Lord, help me be attentive to Your life in me. Thank You for the "much more" that causes me to reign in life through You (Romans 5:17).
